Long Overdue Updates

Our website is in the process of a complete overhaul, so most of the pages are temporarily down, but you can still find the latest news here.

On the show scene...
It's been a busy summer, and we've only made it to a couple shows. Kemo (Dharian's Dare to Dream of Woz) made his show debut at the Sedalia shows in July and behaved BEAUTIFULLY! For a puppy, he is incredibly poised in the ring. His second show was today in Burlington, and he was RWD.

Phoenix (South House Echelon Painted Desert) pictured below, was bred and co-owned by Meg Sorhus (SouthHouse Basenjis). This gorgeous brindle boy lives with his owner, Melissa, in Michigan but she graciously allowed him to visit Meg to attend some shows this summer. Phoenix is sired by our boy, Firbi (SunDiata Dahabu Firimbi) and is out of Meg's girl, India (CH Jumoke Quita Dream of India). At the Sedalia show, Phoenix was RWD one day to a major. At the Burlington show, he picked up his first point going WD/BOB.

And, we're very pleased to announce that Phoenix is going to be the sire of one of our co-bred litters this year! He has been bred to Gidget (Echelon-Rafiki Touch of Class). Meg will be whelping this litter. Red/white and brindle/white puppies are expected around October 9. Meg is also leasing another one of our girls to do a second co-bred litter. Our black/white girl Emmy (Lacada's Featured Attraction) will be bred to CH Jerlin-SS General Powell. There is a possibility of black/white, red/white and tricolor puppies in this litter. We're still waiting for Emmy to come in season, so stay tuned for more updates!

New Year and Lots of Updates

Happy (belated) New Year to everyone! We had a pretty tough beginning to our 2010. We said goodbye to Carlie and Reno in January.

Carlie (Jaiye's Turn The Page) was my first basenji and the catalyst for my love of the breed. She was 13 years young when cancer took her on January 5, 2010.

Reno (Jaiye's Reckless Renegade) was our second basenji. He was 4 years old when he joined the family about a year after we got Carlie. They were best buddies, and I think her passing left him completely lost. He died a week to the day after Carlie, on January 12, 2010. Reno was 15 years old.

Hopefully 2010 gets better from here! Entries are in for our first show of the season. Rumor will also be going, but not being shown. Although she is 2 years old and physically mature, her emotional maturity is right around 9 weeks old, LOL. I've never had such a silly (and by silly I mean happy go lucky, oozing with Joie de vivre) girl!

Very Sad News

On Saturday, December 4, Emmy delivered her litter prematurely. Unfortunately it was just too early, and we lost all 4 puppies. The vet thinks that Emmy's progesterone levels fell prematurely sending her into the early labor. The only good news is that Emmy is doing fine and it looks like we've avoided mastitis.

Good news from the shows!

Last Saturday, Chaz (AB No Quarter Given At Melar), the sire of our upcoming litter out of Emmy won another point towards his championship AND a Group 2 from the classes under Judge Mr. William Cunningham!! Chaz was owner-handled by Melody Falcone (Melar Basenjis).

Saturday evening, Neeko (Melar-Echelon As If By Magic) won a Puppy Group 1 at his very first match! Neeko is sired by Chaz and out of Talon (CH Echelon Noble Eagle at Melar). We co-own Neeko with Melody. Looks like he's off to a good start!

Looks like puppies!

After a very disappointing ultrasound last week that showed no puppies, I had another ultrasound done on Emmy this week. Looks like I was just too early last week, because this week we saw puppies! Although it's difficult to count exact numbers on an ultrasound, we found at least 3 distinct puppies. :)

Because it looks like this is going to be a smaller litter (and I already have at least 3 reservations depending on sex of the puppies), I'm not planning on taking any deposits until AFTER the litter is born. If you would still like to be notified of things as they progress and be put on our waiting list, drop me an email at: heather@echelonbasenjis.com.

Welcome to our blog

I decided that it would be much easier to update our news on a blog rather than on the website. There is still a news link on the website, but it will direct you to the blog. So, for the most recent happenings, this is the place to look!

It's been a fairly slow summer. With summer labs in session, I didn't have much of a chance to do any showing. I do have exciting plans for next year. Gidget (Echelon-Rafiki Touch of Class) will be making her Rally Obedience debut. She is a very eager to please girl.

Rumor (Echelon Innuendo) will hopefully be making her conformation debut. It's hard to believe that Rumor is almost 2 years old. She's taking a long time to mature, but I think the wait has been worth it! Rumor is pictured below at 5 months old.

We do have a litter planned for this fall. Our black/white girl Emmy (Lacada's Featured Attraction) will be bred to AB No Quarter Given At Melar (Chaz). Chaz is a very handsome boy owned by Melody Falcone (Melar Basenjis in Nebraska) and co-owned by his breeder, Wanda Pooley (AdventureLand Basenjis in Illinois). I'm very excited about the potential pups from this litter. All health testing has been done, and now we're just waiting for Emmy to come in season.
